About the Nashua Dog Owner's Group
The Nashua Dog Owners Group is
a 501(c) 3 non-profit charitable trust registered with the State
of New Hampshire and the Federal Government. Our organization is
dedicated to opening a permanent dog park in Nashua, NH. Until our
dog park is created we have a playgroup that meets every Sunday
morning from 8-10 am. We have over 100 dogs that attend the playgroup
each Sunday, with a total of 600 members in the Nashua Dog Owner's
Group, six Committees and 11 Board Members (see below).
How It Got Started
The Nashua Dog Owner's Group was started out
of the successful Sunday Dog Playgroup that's been in existence
since March of 2004. One of our Board Member's, Charlie Posnick,
moved to Nashua from the Boston area where there were a number of
playgroups he would bring his dog to for socialization and exercise.
In Nashua he selected a fenced-in field, picked a start date, handed
out flyers to other dog owners and posted a sign 'Dog playgroup
every Sunday from 9-11am. There were over 20 dogs that attended
the first playgroup. The City of Nashua later issued an official
permit for our playgroup from March - December of 2004. Today it
is a total team effort of volunteers that keeps this going each
Sunday, led by our
Board of Directors, Committee members and some allies we have in City
government.
Our Goal
We have a single-minded goal and that is to
create a permanent off-leash dog park in Nashua in 2006 that will
be open from sunrise to sunset seven days a week.
Mission Statement
As responsible companion dog owners and city residents,
we seek to promote the health, safety and welfare of Nashua area
canines by establishing a safe, secure park for dogs. This park
would allow dogs to socialize and play off-leash under owner supervision
in a dedicated open space. Our goal is to establish a quality public
dog park with a self-policing clientele and documented user regulations
that is financially self-sufficient from public funding, using other
successful municipal dog parks as models.
We recognize that companion dogs that are offered
opportunities to expend energy and socialize contribute to the safety
of the greater Nashua community and further enhance the quality
of lives of their owners and caregivers. We also seek to educate
the community on the importance of responsible dog ownership, such
as public policy, licensing, and health and safety issues of canines,
through promotion of a dog park and the interaction of its user
community. This purpose will be achieved through the public use
of a dog park facility and the camaraderie of Nashua area dog enthusiasts.
